June 9 ACT registration deadline approaching

April 30, 2007

The regular registration deadline for the June 9, 2007 ACT is Friday, May 4. Late registration (costing more) is available until May 18th. To register, go to act.org. This is the last ACT test date until September and the last chance for seniors to reach the Bright Futures target of 28.

07-08 ACT test dates

note: The ACT is not required by any Florida colleges/universities, but some students find it easier to reach the Bright Futures targets on the ACT than the SAT because the ACT has a science section and generally less reliance on vocabulary than the SAT.

FCAT grammar a problem for many

April 27, 2007

from Fl Today story
FCAT Writing Plus results show students in Brevard County and across the state struggled with the tests newer multiple-choice section compared with the essay portion. In each grade tested, more than three-quarters of Florida students and more than 80 percent of Brevard students scored on or above grade level on the essay. But a far smaller percentage of students — including fewer than half in the eighth grade — scored on or above grade level on the overall writing test that included the multiple-choice section.

“I dont think we were that prepared for it,” Collin McAliley, an eighth-grader at Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High, said of the multiple-choice section. “But I thought it was pretty easy.”

But then, Collin, 2006 Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge Finalist may not exactly be a representative student to ask about the difficulty of the FCAT.

CBHS student writes about Cappies in the Verge

April 26, 2007

from Fl Today’s The VERGE
The Cappies program is an international program that brings journalism and theater together as teams of Cappie critics go to school plays throughout the year and discuss, review and vote on them.
The district’s Cappie director, Kevin Buck, also Cocoa Beach High’s theater teacher, says the program “celebrates” the students whose passions are otherwise ignored.
