Summer reading for baffled parents of seniors

May 31, 2007

Your kids already know about Sparknotes. They are just like Cliff Notes except much hipper, and without those telltale caution stripes… and in the case of the online versions, absolutely free.

There’s a lot more than literary guides at Sparknotes.com, though, including a ton of test prep materials and lots of college selection and financial aid help for students and their parents. Here’s a good link for senior parents to start: SparkCollege: Find Your College. Find it Fast.

Another Pink Team article

from FL Today Communities North Central:

Robots haven’t conquered the world — yet — but the PINK Robotics team almost did.

The PINK team, made up of students from Rockledge High and Cocoa Beach Junior/Senior High, recently placed second in the World Championships of Robotics in Atlanta.

FL Today covers Kyla’s honor

May 29, 2007

But remember you heard it here first :)

from Florida Today:

Kyla Davis Horn, a senior next fall at Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High, was the only student from Florida selected to attend the summer research science session offered at Massachusetts Institute of Technology this summer.

The highly selective six-week program is considered one of the world’s most prestigious science programs for high school students. Only 80 students from 24 countries were chosen to attend this year.

“I was quite frankly amazed that I’d beaten the odds,” Kyla said of the moment she discovered she’d be heading to Boston this summer.

Quite frankly, Kyla, no one who knows you is all that amazed. Congratulations, nonetheless, on this very prestigious honor!

What now for the class of ‘08?

May 26, 2007

First off, we can start calling them seniors now. Second, there’s plenty they need to do this summer. IB’ers should start by introducing themselves to family members who haven’t seen their faces since August, then get to work on their extended essays. All rising seniors can find a handy summer checklist from the guidance office here. The more your child checks off this list now, the more time he or she will have for senior fun next year. (Maybe that line will work better for you than it did for me.)

Roccobot 2K7 featured in tech journal

May 25, 2007

IEEE Spectrum is a magazine widely read by electrical engineers. The lead photo in this article about all girl teams (which ours isn’t, but lots of girls participate and lead) features the Pink Team’s robot, which the team calls by the year, hence Roccobot 2K7.
