In his final scholastic season, he led Cocoa Beach with averages of 17 points and 9.5 rebounds as the Minutemen finished 22-5 and captured the Cape Coast Conference title at 11-1, a game better than talented Eau Gallie.

For that reason, Emory was chosen as FLORIDA TODAY’s 2008 Boys Basketball Player of the Year by the newspaper’s sports staff.

Run to honor Rafe April 12

Ralph Maccarone says he tries to keep his mind off the loss of his son by attending the soccer matches he so loved and would have played in, were he only here.

This month, he will add a running event to his list of places to visit.

The Cocoa Beach High School and Brevard Football Club player has not been forgotten by his friends and teammates either, so they have organized the Rafe Maccarone Scholarship 5K Run/Walk, which will take place at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 12, at the high school track in Cocoa Beach.

All proceeds will go toward the college scholarship, which will be awarded in Rafe’s name to deserving Beach High students.

“Our robot is geared to go 12 feet per second, and we’re actually not one of the fastest,” said Sharra Argo, 18, who arrived in Hawai’i this week with her teammates from Cocoa Beach High School in Florida.They were all sporting hot pink T-shirts and hairdos to match their hot pink robot, Roccobot. The robot was equipped with a telescopic arm to lift the inflated balls over a 6 1/2-foot-high overpass to score extra points.

USF ups tuition, requires frosh to live in dorms

The University of South Florida board of trustees made two big changes Thursday: raising tuition and requiring incoming freshman who live outside of the Tampa Bay area to reside on campus.Trustees approved a “tuition differential” plan that allows USF to charge in-state undergraduates as much as 30 percent more than the base tuition rate, as long as tuition doesn’t increase more than 15 percent in any one year.

FCAT changes bill introduced

High FCAT scores can mean cash awards for schools and bonuses for teachers. Failing grades can result in administrative shake-ups. Legislation introduced Tuesday, though, is aimed at preventing teaching to the test. The wide-ranging bill, which also revamps public school academic standards, would prohibit using state money for FCAT practice materials such as tests and workbooks.
