Facebook, MySpace posts fair game for colleges

Students such as (Jennie) Van den Boogaard, one of FLORIDA TODAYs Verge student journalists, are being more cautious about what they post on social networking Web sites such as Facebook and MySpace in fear of giving college advisers or future employers the wrong impression.

“I think we are definitely cautious of what we put online,” said Kendall Lightly, an 18-year-old senior at Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School. “I mainly use it to keep in touch with friends who have moved away. If it’s something important, I don’t put it online.”

CBHS falls from Newsweek 100

After several years on the Newsweek list of top 100 high schools, CBHS has dropped to number…101.
The list is based solely on the ratio of number of AP, IB and Cambridge tests taken per number of graduating seniors. CBHS is still the highest ranking school in the district.

Kyla Horn named Presidential Scholar

Earlier this month, U.S. secretary of Education Margaret Spellings announced 139 outstanding high school seniors as the 2008 Presidential Scholars.

This year, one of these students is Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High’s Kyla Horn.

Presidential scholars are students who have shown outstanding academic achievement, artistic excellence, leadership, citizenship and service to their schools and communities.

Congratulations, Kyla, on yet another very impressive accomplishment!

The CBHS/RHS Robotics team is in Atlanta seeking to repeat their success at the world championships in the Georgia Dome. The event is broadcast live both on NASA-TV (check your cable or satellite listings) and on the web. They are in the Newton division through Saturday morning. Just 12 talented and lucky teams out of the 340 that enter will advance to the Einstein field for the semifinals on Saturday afternoon. Can the Pink Team repeat their finals appearance of last year? Can they bring home the gold this time? Tune in to find out.

Brevard places 3rd in Commissioners Academic Challenge

CBHS students made up half of the state’s 3rd best Division 1 academic team in Saturday’s state tournament held at Disney. Kyla Horn, Tim Barker and Derek Hall joined all star teammates from Eau Gallie, Merritt Island and West Shore high schools to compete against teams from the largest school districts in Florida. Congratulations, Kyla, Tim and Derek!

CBHS seniors Ryan Julian and Derek Hall had their proposal selected for the Grant Imahara VEXplorer challenge. Congratulations and good luck, boys!

Revell, marketer of the VEXplorer robotics system, in partnership with Robot magazine, Innovation First and SolidWorks Corporation, is running this first-ever VEXplorer challenge offering contestants the opportunity to demonstrate their robotics creativity as they compete for a $5,000 college scholarship and other prizes. Grant Imahara, Discovery Channel’s Mythbuster known for his robotics skill, and Robot magazine selected 25 robot enthusiasts’ ideas. These contestants, who received free VEXplorer systems, have until June 1st to design, build and videotape their unique VEXplorer robots doing unusual things. Contestants will upload their videos to YouTube for the world to view and for Grant Imahara and Robot magazine to select first, second and third place winners.

Johnson hits 2 home runs in Viera win

Johnson entered late in the fifth inning and shut out the Hawks the rest of the way. The hard-throwing left-hander yielded two hits, walked one and struck out three in earning a save, and the win for tiring starter Steve Conrod.
